UNIPV Pavia

University of Pavia

Founded in 1361, the University of Pavia is the oldest in the Lombardy Region (north of Italy) and one of the oldest universities in the world. It was the sole university in Milan and the greater Lombardy region until the end of the 19th century. Currently, it has 18 departments and 9 faculties. The University of Pavia is a campus of 26,000 students deeply integrated with a medium-sized city, uncrowded, where everything you need is within a fifteen-minute walk. Here, it's easier to meet to learn, work, and live, thanks to short distances and the quality of services for the student community. The university offers over 80 undergraduate programs; over 40 master programs, and roughly 20 doctoral programs. About 1,500 students who enter the university every year are international students.

LENA Center

The LENA (Applied Nuclear Energy Laboratory) Center is an “Interdepartmental Service Center” of the University of Pavia which manages a nuclear research reactor, and a cyclotron for the production of radioisotopes and other sources of ionizing radiation making them available to researchers from the University of Pavia and other users, public and private, for carrying out applied research, teaching, and service activities. The Center directly carries out research and training activities. It provides services to individuals by encouraging the transfer of research results in the field of nuclear technologies to the production system.

TRIGA Reactor

The 250 kW TRIGA Mark II research reactor at LENA Center achieved its first criticality on 15 November 1965 and since then the reactor has been playing a crucial role in education and training, support of scientific projects, research, and development also in nuclear safety culture to national and international level. The reactor has mainly been used for training and education of university students, private institution personnel, future operators, and technicians in the nuclear field. The main activities of the Center are neutron activation analysis, isotope production, neutron beam applications, testing and development of digital instrumentation under various radiation fields, forensic science, radiochemistry, and nuclear physics. Computer simulation applied to the reactor in different configurations and to the neutron beam channel allowed the design, study, and testing of new irradiation facilities such as the prompt gamma Neutron activation facility and the more recent neutron radiography & tomography experimental facility (unique in Italy).
