Purpose:

The ENEEP Course “Train the Students” is devoted to detectors and their applications in nuclear science and technology. In the course, the basic operating principles of various neutron and gamma detector types will be presented and measurements will be performed using radiation sources or the core of the JSI TRIGA reactor as an intense source of neutron and gamma radiation. The participants will gain knowledge and practical experience with detectors of different types, widely used in the nuclear field (detection in nuclear environments, research, radiation protection) and in nuclear reactors themselves (in-core and ex-core instrumentation).

Eligible countries (Grant application requirement):

27 European Union countries, Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, The United Kingdom, Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, and North Macedonia

Participants’ qualifications:

The course is aimed at students in master degree programmes studying nuclear engineering as the major curriculum. It is also suitable for students studying various major engineering curricula such as power engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering with future assignments in various nuclear curricula.

09:30 – 10:30: Presentation: Research at JSI TRIGA reactor

10:30 – 12:00: Visit to JSI TRIGA reactor and laboratories

13:00 – 16:00: Gamma spectrometry using a HPGe semiconductor detector

9:00 – 12:00: Neutron activation analysis

13:00 – 16:00: Primary water activation

  • Wednesday, 26.10.2022

9:00 – 12:00: In-core gamma field mapping using a miniature ionization chamber

13:00 – 16:00: In-core neutron flux mapping using a miniature fission chamber

  • Thursday, 27.10.2022

9:00 – 12:00: Neutron flux measurements using a compensated ionization chamber

13:00 – 16:00: Measurement of BF3 neutron detector response

  • Friday, 28.10.2022

9:00 – 12:00: Measurement of self-powered neutron detector signals

13:00 – 14:30: Course evaluation and closing.

Application Procedure:

To apply to the course, the applicant should submit the following documents:

  • filled-in application form,
  • curriculum vitae,
  • motivation letter,
  • recommendation letter,
  • enrolment certificate,
  • list of courses passed, and grades achieved, relevant to the attendance at course.

The ENEEP evaluation committee will email to all applicants the results of the application procedure till the 15th of September 2022, 23.59 CET.

Course fee, fellowship:

The course fee is 2 500 EUR (two thousand five hundred) without TAX and covers participation on the exercises listed in the Course program, social activities and handouts or support materials. The course fee does not include accommodation, per diem and transportation of the participants.

The selected participants will not be charged by the course fee and will be granted the ENEEP fellowship of 800 EUR (eight hundred). This will cover accommodation, per diem, local public transport, health insurance and transportation to and from the venue. The ENEEP fellowship will be granted only for participants from eligible countries.

The maximum number of granted participants is 10 and the minimum number of total participants to open a course is 8. In case if the number of eligible applications exceeds the maximum number defined for the course, an extra course might be opened.
